Matthews Elevated to Assistant Director of Recruiting and Player Development
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami men’s basketball head coach Jim Larrañaga announced Thursday the elevation of graduate assistant Peter Matthews to Assistant Director of Recruiting and Player Development.
Matthews, who will complete his Master of Science in education and sports administration at Miami over the summer, spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball program.
“Pete has a very outgoing personality, which allows him to build long-lasting connections with everybody that he meets,” Larrañaga said. “He has forged professional relationships with people from all walks of life, including NBA players, college players and college coaches. Pete brings an extensive network to our program and we are very happy to have him join our coaching staff.”
In his new role, Matthews will be heavily involved in the Hurricanes’ recruiting efforts, coordinating travel logistics and official and unofficial visits. He will also be tasked with the development of current student-athletes through individual training sessions as well as team practices.
As a graduate assistant, Matthews was an instrumental part of the Hurricanes’ practices and game preparation. He used Synergy Sports to assist in analyzing opponent film for scouting purposes, facilitated the set up and break down of practice and aided in the player development process.
In Matthews’ first year as a graduate assistant, he played a supporting role in Miami’s historic run to the Final Four of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
During his time in Miami, Matthews has also been involved with the Taylor Sports Group and Octagon Sports, assisting not only in court workouts for numerous NBA players but also helping players with travel arrangements and training session schedules.
Prior to his time at Miami, Matthews served as a student manager for the Robert Morris men’s basketball team where he scheduled and supervised practice sessions, organized team events and maintained team equipment.
In May of 2022, Matthews graduated from Robert Morris with a bachelor’s degree in communication and an emphasis in sports management.
