Miami Falls to UNC in Second Round of ACC Championship
CARY, N.C. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team (11-14, 2-10 ACC) finished its ACC Championship run Thursday afternoon when it fell to fifth-seeded North Carolina (14-8, 7-5 ACC), 4-0, at the Cary Tennis Park.
Both teams started doubles off strong, trading points and being tied two-all on each court, but the Tarheels started to pull away. At the top court, No. 31 Benjamin Kittay and Phillip Jordan defeated No. 43 Vladislav Melnic and Adrien Burdet, 6-3, to give UNC the first court. Then, Karl Poling and Will Peters clinched the opening point, 6-4, on court three over Nacho Serra Sanchez and Yannik Rahman.
When play was halted, Martin Katz and Antonio Prat were down 5-4 to Patrick Schoen and Peter Murphy on court two.
UNC kept the momentum going into singles. Anuj Watane claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alejandro Arraya on court six. Within seconds of each other, courts four and three finished to give the Tarheels a win. Karl Poling, ranked No. 81, defeated Adrien Burdet, 6-1, 6-4, while Patrick Schoen took down Vladislav Melnic, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the win.
No. 92 Martin Katz was up 6-4, 3-4 at the top court to Benjamin Kittay, No. 125 Antonio Prat led Phillip Jordan, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 on court two and Nacho Serra Sanchez was down 6-4, 3-2 to Will Peters at the No. 5 spot, when play was halted.
