Miami Wraps Regular Season with 4-3 Win Over Virginia Tech
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 19 University of Miami women’s tennis team (10-6, 8-4 ACC) wrapped up the regular season with a 4-3 victory over No. 71 Virginia Tech (8-12, 3-10 ACC) on Sunday evening.
With the win, head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews gained sole possession of the third-most wins as an ACC head coach in league history with 371 wins. She now totals 422 wins at the U.
The Hokies took the first doubles win, with Charlotte Cartledge and Ozlem Uslu defeating Alexa Noel and Audrey Boch-Collins, 6-3, on court three. At the top court, the No. 29 ranked duo of Isabella Pfennig and Xinyi Nong battled to take the 6-3 win over Katie Andreini and Dariya Radulova. Virginia Tech ultimately claimed the doubles point, after Semra Aksu and Erika Cheng took down No. 67 Leonie Schuknecht and Antonia Balzert, 7-5, on court two.
Miami bounced back to start singles, taking three consecutive courts. No. 62 Isabella Pfennig notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Andreini on court two, then Xinyi Nong followed it up with a court-five win against Cheng, 6-1, 6-0. At the top court, No. 9 Alexa Noel dominated Uslu, 6-0, 6-2 to put the Hurricanes up 3-1.
Virginia Tech put up a singles win after Laima Frosch defeated Maria Paula Vargas, 6-2, 6-3, on court six. The remaining two courts battled for the team win. After a tiebreaker set, No. 112 Audrey Boch-Collins delivered the 6-1, 7-6 (1) win over Tamara Barad Itzhaki for the Miami win.
On the final court, Semra Aksu beat Antonia Balzert, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 on court three to give the Hokies their final point.
The Hurricanes will now head to Cary, N.C., for the ACC Championship as the sixth seed. Miami will receive a bye and begin play Thursday, April 18, at 6 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park against No. 11-seed Virginia Tech or No. 14-seed Louisville.
