No. 19 Miami Drops Top-20 Battle To No. 15 NC State
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (8-5, 6-3 ACC) fell 4-3 to No. 15 NC State (17-6, 7-3 ACC) on Friday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
Despite the loss, the Hurricanes notched three individual ranked wins between singles and doubles action.
Miami took the doubles point to start the match, claiming back-to-back ranked wins for the opening point. Leonie Schuknecht and Antonia Balzert took down No. 11 Anna Zyryanova and Sophie Abrams, 6-3, on court two. To clinch the doubles point, the No. 49 ranked duo of Isabella Pfennig and Xinyi Nong grabbed a 6-3 win against No. 15 Amelia Rajecki and Maddy Zampardo at the top court.
NC State opened singles with consecutive wins to take the lead, No. 45 Zyryanova beat Balzert, 6-1, 6-2, on court three while Gina Dittmann claimed court four over Schuknecht, 6-2, 6-3.
No. 71 Pfennig picked up the Canes’ first win by notching the 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against No. 54 Rencheli on court two. In a hard-fought battle in a top-15 matchup, No. 5 Rajecki claimed the top court, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, over No. 14 Noel. The Wolfpack then clinched the match after a 6-4, 7-5 victory on court five over No. 104 Boch-Collins.
Nong continued out play and grabbed the court-six win, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, over Gabriella Broadfoot to make it 4-3.
The Hurricanes will stay on the road and head to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face Wake Forest on April 7.
