No. 23 Miami Defeats No. 36 Florida State, 5-2
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 23 University of Miami women’s tennis team secured the 5-2 win over No. 36 Florida State on Sunday afternoon.
To notch their fourth-straight win over the Seminoles, the Hurricanes claimed all three doubles matchups before winning three consecutive singles courts to clinch the win.
Miami (4-3 overall, 2-1 ACC) controlled doubles over FSU (7-5 overall, 1-2 ACC) to open the match. Alexa Noel and Audrey Boch-Collins claimed the 6-1 court-three win against Millie Bissett and Kristyna Lavickova. Leonie Schuknecht and Antonia Balzert battled from behind to secure the 6-4 win on court two over No. 42 Maelie Monfils and Ellie Schoppe to notch the opening point. At the top court, No. 45 Isabella Pfennig and Xinyi Nong completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win over Anna Arkadianou and Vic Allen.
The Hurricanes continued the momentum by taking three courts for a Miami win. Noel, ranked No. 11, dominated No. 66 Allen, 6-0, 6-3, at the top court, followed by a quick 6-3, 6-2 win from Schuknecht over Bissett on court four. Nong then clinched the win with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory against Eva Shaw on court six.
FSU tallied two points with wins on courts two and three. Despite No. 58 Pfennig keeping it close, No. 40 Schoppe delivered the 7-6 (8), 6-3 win on court two. Arkadianou followed it with a court-three win after battling No. 114 Balzert to three sets and claiming the court, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
In an intense back-and-forth battle for the last win, No. 96 Boch-Collins took on Lavickova on court five. The Las Vegas, Nev., native forced a third-set tiebreaker in her four-hour match to win it 5-7, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (15-13).
Miami will be back in action on March 15 when they travel to Louisville, Ken., for its first ACC road trip to face Louisville.
