Hurricanes Fall To No. 13 Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped its first match of ITA Kickoff Weekend against No. 13 Arizona, 4-0, on Saturday evening.
Doubles was a back-and-forth battle, but the Wildcats came out victorious. Herman Hoeyeraal and Gustaf Strom defeated Adrien Burdet and Martin Katz, 6-3, court two. Miami answered with a court-three win from Sam Baumagrtner and Nacho Serra Sanchez over Nick Lagaev and Sasha Rozin, 6-4.
Coming down to the last court, the No. 11 ranked duo of Colton Smith and Jay Friend came from behind and won 7-6 (5) over Vladislav Melnic and Antonio Prat to clinch the doubles point for the Wildcats.
Arizona then claimed three-straight courts, starting with No. 34 Friend (UA) defeating Katz, 6-3, 6-1, on court two.
On court five, Hoeyeraal took down Rahman, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, while No. 5 Smith secured the match with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 win over Melnic at the top court.
When play was halted, Prat was up 7-6 (5), 1-6, 1-0 to No. 63 Strom, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 1-0, Lagaev was up 6-2, 4-6, 4-3 to Burdet, and Serra Sanchez was up 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 to Christensen.
The Hurricanes will compete in the consolation match tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET against Tulane.
