Leao Named to U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team for Second-Straight Year

by James Knable

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Janice Leao has been selected to the 2023 U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team (WCNT), USA Volleyball announced Thursday.

The New Bedford, Massachusetts native is among 20 of the country’s top collegiate women’s volleyball players elected to the team after participating in the USA Volleyball Women’s National Team Open Program this past February. This is the second time that the middle blocker will be participating in the WCNT, as she was named to the national collegiate team this time last year.

Leao will now travel to Anaheim, California, June 18-24 to train alongside the U.S. Women’s National Team as it prepares for the final preliminary round of the Volleyball Nations League. She will be coached by Michelle Chatman Smith (Florida ’05), the current assistant coach for the San Diego State Aztecs volleyball program.

Leao is coming off another incredible season for the Hurricanes as the star middle blocker notched 259 total kills, was named all-region by AVCA Volleyball, first-team all-ACC, and started all 30 matches in the 2022-23 season.
