Dear Canes Community,

We are heading down the homestretch of the 2022-23 season for Miami Athletics, one that saw 13 of our teams advance to the postseason, our first men’s basketball Final Four in school history, our first-ever women’s basketball Elite Eight, nine individual ACC champions, two ACC Players of the Year and 10 Canes All-Americans.

In Play

We have the opportunity to add to that All-America total this week as 12 Canes are heading to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which begin Wednesday. Décio Andrade (hammer throw), Hannah Hall (shot put), Sanaa Hebron (400m hurdles), Ashley Moore (triple jump), Marquasha Myers (triple jump), Kristina Rakocevic (discus), Sincere Rhea (100m hurdles), Russell Robinson (long jump, triple jump), Skyla Wilson (400m hurdles) and the women’s 4x400m relay team all qualified. Russell enters the national meet ranked second in the country in the triple jump, while Décio is currently ranked fourth in the hammer throw. Good luck to all our track and field student-athletes in Austin!

Our baseball season came to an end yesterday as the Canes lost to Texas 10-6 in the Coral Gables Regional final. Yohandy Morales hit a three-run home run in defeat, one of four home runs for him in NCAA play. We finished the season with 42 wins, our most since 2016, and hosted a regional for the second straight year. Thank you to all our fans who packed The Light this past weekend and all season long!

Football Notes

Last week the ACC announced the kickoff times for our first three games of the season.

We kick off the season at Hard Rock Stadium against Miami (Ohio) on Friday, September 1, at 7 p.m. on ACC Network. On September 9 we host Texas A&M, which will be a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on ABC. We next face Bethune-Cookman on Thursday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m. on ACCN.

The ACC also announced that our season finale at Boston College the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 24) will kick off at 12 p.m. on ABC.

Overall, we have seven home games this fall, including visits from Clemson and Louisville. You can renew your season tickets by calling 1-800-GO-CANES or purchase season tickets by clicking here. We can’t wait to see you cheering on the Canes at Hard Rock all season long!

Contract Extensions

We announced contract extensions for three head coaches in May. Men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga signed a one-year extension through 2026-27, women’s basketball coach Katie Meier inked a one-year extension through 2027-28, and women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews signed a two-year extension through the 2025-26 season. All three coaches are outstanding representatives of our University, and we are excited to see them continue to mentor our student-athletes for years to come.

Academics

We had 85 student-athletes earn their undergraduate or graduate degrees during Spring commencement. I am extremely proud of our student-athlete graduates and what they have accomplished, and I hope to see all of them back on campus often, engaging as proud University of Miami alumni. I can’t wait to see where their life’s journey takes them from here!

Our department earned a score of 977 on the NCAA’s latest Academic Progress Report. Seven programs achieved APR perfect scores of 1,000 for the 2021-22 academic year – men’s cross country, men’s diving, golf, soccer, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and volleyball. I am proud of our student-athletes and the exceptional work they continue to do in the classroom, and we will continue to work with our staff and coaches to improve our APR scores.

NIL

In this new era of Name, Image & Likeness, NIL opportunities can help all our Hurricane student-athletes maximize the value of their brand and learn valuable entrepreneurial skills during their time at Miami. NIL opportunities can also help you market your business.

You can connect directly with our Hurricanes student-athletes for endorsements, promotions, and appearances. You can also support them by contributing to the Canes Connection collective, which builds valuable partnerships with local businesses and connects those businesses with our student-athletes. Our Canes Community remains stronger than ever thanks to your continued support. Go Canes!
