Miami Falls to No. 8 Virginia in ACC Championship Quarterfinals
CARY, N.C. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team’s ACC Championship bid came to an end Friday afternoon when it fell to top-seeded Virginia, 4-2, at the Cary Tennis Park.
No. 8 Virginia (22-4, 12-0 ACC) advances to the ACC Championship semifinals, while the No. 45 Hurricanes (14-10, 5-7 ACC) will return to Coral Gables, Fla., to await their postseason fate.
For the second straight match, the third doubles duo of sophomore Martin Katz and freshman Antonio Prat got things started for the Hurricanes, taking a 6-2 victory on court three.
Fifth-year senior Franco Aubone and graduate student Dan Martin clinched the doubles point for Miami with a 6-4 win at second doubles, putting Miami ahead 1-0. At the time of clinching, fifth-year senior Juan Martin Jalif and freshman Martin Vergara Del Puerto were leading Inaki Montes de la Torre and William Woodall, 5-4, on court one.
Virginia’s No. 8 Chris Rodesch tied the match at one-all, defeating No. 24 Martin, 6-3, 6-2, at first singles.
Aubone responded for the Hurricanes, recording a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six to put Miami back in the lead, 2-1. Just moments later, No. 43 Jeffrey von der Schulenburg tallied Virginia’s second point of the day, besting Katz, 6-2, 6-3, at third singles.
No. 83 Ryan Goetz gave Virginia its first lead of the day, 3-2, tallying a 6-3, 6-1 victory over graduate student Leo Bierbaum on court four. The match was ultimately decided on court five where Alexander Kiefer defeated freshman Nacho Serra Sanchez, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the win for Virginia.
Miami will await its postseason fate, tuning in to the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, May 1.
