Byrne Leads the Way for the Hurricanes at the UCF Challenge

ORLANDO – The University of Miami women’s golf team returned to action in its first tournament of the spring season at the UCF Challenge, hosted by the University of Central Florida.

The Hurricanes competed against No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 11 Mississippi State, No. 20 Kent State, No. 23 Iowa State, UCF, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, College of Charleston, Penn State, Kentucky, Michigan State, North Texas, North Florida, Northwestern, and Kansas, in the three-day tournament. The Hurricanes shot 32-over-par as a team, placing 18th.

Third-year sophomore Sara Byrne led the Hurricanes with a 216 (E), 54-hole score and finished tied for 37thamong all individuals. Miami shot a three-round total of 896 (+32) at the par-72, 6,349-yard Eagle Creek Golf Club.

Wake Forest placed first with a score of 822 (-42), followed by Mississippi State 826 (-38), and Northwestern placing third 827 (-37).

Byrne finished all three rounds shooting even par.

A pair of Hurricanes both had a round with even par – Franziska Sliper (72; first round) and Daniella Barrett (72; second round). Barrett placed T72 overall, with a final score of 222 (+6). Sliper went on to finish with a score of 230 (+14).

Freshman Katie Carman and Elisa Villamizar both competed in their first career collegiate tournament. Villamizar and Carman both recorded a three-round total of 231 (+15).

The Hurricanes return to competition Feb. 19-21, competing in the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Fla.
