All Eyes on the ACC Championship

Championship weekend is here for the Miami rowing team.

The Canes are set to face off with eight other Atlantic Coast Conference schools beginning on Friday with a quartet of heat races.

The ACC Championship marks the culmination of the hard work and dedication the Miami team and staff have put into the 2021 season.

“Getting to this point in the season is a testament to our team staying the course and coming together,” head coach Dave Sanderson said. “We’ve been telling the team all season to be the best version of themselves.  Our hope for this weekend is that they each row to the capacity that each individual and boat is capable of, and that they can walk away knowing they gave it their all.”

The Schedule

The 3v8 will kick off racing for the Canes on Friday, squaring off with Duke, Syracuse and North Carolina in heat two. The top three finishers will advance to the grand final, while the fourth-place boat will compete in the petite final.

Miami’s 1v8 takes off at 8:40 a.m., competing against Syracuse, Duke and Louisville, while the sixth-seeded 2v8 heads to the starting line at 9:05 a.m. to race against Syracuse, Clemson and Louisville. Like the 3v8, the top three boats in each heat will advance to the grand final.

The Canes’ only four-boat of the championship will take the water at 9:20 a.m. on Friday to take on Virginia, Duke, Notre Dame and Boston College. The top three boats advance to the grand final and the fourth- and fifth-place boats will compete in the petite final.

This weekend is particularly bittersweet for the Miami rowers who chose to return to school this season after their senior season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-20.

“Last year we were working towards the [ACC Championship] and then couldn’t go, so we are even more excited this year,” fifth-year senior Loretta Brueckner said. “We are feeling confident and are going to go out there and do our best.”

Among those seniors are Brueckner, Halle Alitz and Demetra Vlahos, all of whom will compete as a unit in the 2v8 on Friday, in addition to Victoria Stewart who will row in the 1v4.
