Swimming Puts Together Strong First Day in Kansas

TOPEKA, Kansas — The Miami Hurricanes enjoyed a strong opening at the Kansas Invite Friday, with sophomore Zorry Mason and junior captain Sydney Knapp leading the way on Day 1.

Thanks in part to the duo’s impressive performances, the Hurricanes ended the first day in third place with 130 points.

Mason set a meet record with a preliminary time of 2:00.32 in the 200-yard IM during the morning and ended up taking second in the ‘A’ final with a time of 1:59.91. Chandler Sensibaugh scored points for Miami with a fifth-place finish in the ‘B’ final of the same event (2:05.97).

Knapp went a lifetime best in the 50-yard freestyle (23.14) in the morning and then captured the top finish in the ‘A’ final with an even lower time at night, cracking Miami’s top-10 all-time performers list in the process. Junior Carmen San Nicolas was sixth in the ‘A’ final with a time of 23.56.

The Hurricanes’ entry in the 400-yard medley relay, comprised of junior Alaina Skellett, Mason, freshman Isabel Traba and Knapp, took second in the event (3:41.84) to end the opening day on a high note.

It was Miami’s second impressive relay of the day – Mason, San Nicolas, Skellett and Knapp were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.76) to open the night’s finals.

Action continues Saturday from the Kansas Classic.
