Golf to Welcome Sara Byrne Next Fall
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami golf team announced Wednesday that international amateur standout Sara Byrne will join the Hurricanes for the start of the 2020 fall season.
“I am very excited to have Sara join the team,” Miami head coach Patti Rizzo said. “She’s not only a great golfer, but she also seems like a wonderful person. She’s very motivated and bubbly and has a lot of enthusiasm, which will add a nice flair to our team. She’s a very petite girl, but hits the ball with a ton of power and very far. It shocks me how far she can hit it. She’s definitely a strong and experienced player and I’m sure she’ll be a great addition to our team.”
Rising as high as No. 88 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), the Cork, Ireland, native is a seasoned international player, representing Ireland from 2016-2019 at the European Championships, Home Internationals and World Junior Championship.
In 2018, Byrne captured the Irish Ladies national crown, earned Irish Girls Player of the Year honors and was named the Irish Ladies Amateur of the Year by Golf Writers.
Byrne will join an already impressive group of international players next fall in junior Kristyna Frydlova, sophomore Anna Backman and freshmen Daniella Barrett and Franziska Sliper. Also, currently a freshman for Miami, Morgan Pankow of New Albany, Ohio, will be the lone American born player on UM’s 2020-21 squad.
