Golf Caps Fall Season with Top-Three Finish

OVERALL | TEAM | INDIVIDUAL

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of Miami golf team capped the fall season with its second consecutive top-five finish, placing third at the Jim West Challenge

Competing on the par 72, 6,033-yard Kissing Tree Golf Club, the Hurricanes extended their par or better streak to five rounds with an even-par 288 on Monday. Overall, Miami finished 16-under 848 through 54 holes, besting both opposing ACC schools in the field, No. 25 Florida State (five-under 859) and Notre Dame (even-par 864).

“We are close, but just not quite there yet. A couple silly mistakes,” Miami head coach Patti Rizzo said. “Overall, they played great and we are on a good track for the spring. We want to peak in the end, not the beginning. We had a slow start to the fall, but we continue to get better every week. We have three freshmen, so we have some growing to do.”

Individually a trio of Canes locked up top-10 finishes, led by junior Kristyna Frydlova’s fifth-place finish at seven-under 209.

Entering Monday with a tournament leading three eagles, the Prague native carded her fourth on the par 5, 486-yard fifth hole to take the overall tournament lead at nine-under. Following a setback on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes, the junior capped the weekend with her fifth eagle to finish even par on the day.

Competing in her 100th round of golf at the University of Miami, senior Renate Grimstad secured her 11th career top-10 finish, carding 12 birdies and finishing five-under-par (211).

Joining Grimstad at five-under-par and in a tie for ninth, Anna Backman collected four birdies on Monday to finish with a co-team-high 12 in San Marcos.

Also registering 12 birdies over the two-day event, freshmen Daniella Barrett rebounded from a slow start to the final round, with a three-under 33 back-nine. Overall, she finished tied for 43rd at three-over 219.

Rounding out the Hurricanes lineup, freshman Franziska Sliper closed out the final 13 holes with a par or better result on each, along with a trio of birdies to finish 10-over 226 for the weekend.

Miami will take a three-month hiatus through the winter months, before returning for the start of spring competition on Feb. 2 in Orlando, Fla. The Hurricanes will compete Feb. 2-4 at the UCF Challenge.
