Swim / Dive Caps Opening Weekend at FIU
MIAMI — The Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving team capped its opening weekend of competition Saturday in a dual meet at crosstown foe FIU, falling to the Panthers, 169-131.
Freshman diver Mia Vallee was Miami’s top performer on the day, taking the top finish in both the 1-meter (299.40) and 3-meter (336.53). Not far behind Vallee was fellow freshman Jessie Creed, who was third in both the 1-meter (293.93) and 3-meter (287.55).
Sophomore Zorry Mason picked up Miami’s first individual swimming win of the meet with the top time in the 100-yard breaststroke. Mason, who was among Miami’s top performers in the team’s opening meet Friday vs. Florida, edged out Taylor Grabenhorst for the best time (1:03.60) in the event.
Freshman Isabel Traba, another of Miami’s top performers Friday against the Gators, delivered again Saturday, picking up the first individual win of her career with a time of 2:02.02 in the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Andrea Todorovic followed suit, capturing her first collegiate win with a time of 2:02.40 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Mason, Miami’s all-time record-holder in the 200-yard IM, cruised in her signature event, touching the wall in a time of 2:04.74.
Second-place times posted Saturday included 10:38.67 by senior Claire McGinnis in the 1000-yard freestyle, 1:51.28 by Carmen San Nicolas in the 200-yard freestyle, 56.44 by Todorovic in the 100-yard backstroke,and 2:18.27 by Mason in the 200-yard breaststroke.
