W. Tennis Plays No. 2 North Carolina in ACC Semis

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The fifth-seeded University of Miami women’s tennis team will make its fourth consecutive appearance in the ACC Championship semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cary Tennis Park.

After a 4-2 win over fourth-seeded and ninth-ranked NC State Friday night, No. 21 Miami (18-6, 9-5 ACC) squares off with top-seeded and second-ranked North Carolina for a berth in the title match. The action will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra HERE, while live stats can be found HERE.

The winner of Saturday’s contest goes to the tournament finale, set for Sunday at 2 p.m., also live on ACC Network Extra. In the other semifinal matchup, second-seeded and third-ranked Duke meets third-seeded and No. 11-ranked Florida State.

Miami owns a 14-17 all-time record against North Carolina, including a 5-6 ledger at neutral sites that features a 1-3 mark in ACC Championship action. Earlier this season, the Hurricanes dropped a narrow 4-3 road decision to the then-topped-ranked Tar Heels on March 24.

With its 2-0 start thus far in 2019, Miami is now 19-13 all-time at the ACC Championship, including 18-11 in Cary. The Hurricanes are in the semifinals for the 11th time in their 15 years in the conference and are seeking their seventh bid in the finals. Miami won the tournament in 2013, defeating top-seeded North Carolina in the semifinals.

The Hurricanes have one ranked singles player, with junior Estela Perez-Somarriba checking in at second nationally. The reigning ACC Player of the Year holds the top mark by a Hurricane since 2007.

In doubles, freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan place a season-high No. 16 on the Oracle/ITA list.

North Carolina, seeking its fourth straight ACC Championship crown, is 27-1 (14-0 ACC) on the year after a 4-0 victory over ninth-seeded and No. 30-ranked Syracuse Friday evening.

The Tar Heels, who have won 18 straight matches, sport five ranked singles players, including three in the top 15, with sixth-ranked Makenna Jones and seventh-ranked Alexa Graham leading the way. Sara Daavettila comes in at No. 14, while Cameron Morra is No. 41 and Jessie Aney is No. 118.

Both of the Tar Heels’ ranked doubles pairs are in the top 10, as Jones and Morra sit at sixth nationally, while Aney and Graham are one spot behind at seventh.
