Four Canes Tapped into ODK

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four University of Miami student-athletes have been tapped into the elite Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) National Leadership Society.

Kristina Fisher (women’s soccer), Anna Runia (track and field), Matthew Wiefels (track and field) and Roxanne Yu (women’s swimming) each earned the prestigious distinction.

“I am so very pleased and excited to welcome these deserving, illustrious students to the ODK membership,” said David Wyman, Miami Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services. “They are awesome academic leaders at our institution and passionate contributors on the athletic teams where they dedicate so much of their energy and effort.”

A junior midfielder, Fisher has made a start in all 53 matches since arriving on campus prior to the 2016 campaign. Through three seasons, she has tallied 10 goals and 13 assists, with the latter tied for seventh on the program’s all-time list. Preparing for her senior season, Fisher also ranks seventh on the UM all-time shot list (127 shots) and is currently tied for ninth with four game-winning goals. Overall, she has collected 4,314 minutes on the pitch, for an average of 81.4 minutes per game.

The Jupiter, Fla., native is majoring in finance, while pursuing a minor in economics. Entering UM as an early enrollee during the spring of 2016, Fisher has made the Dean’s list (minimum 3.5 GPA) in all six of her collegiate semesters and earned Provost’s Honor Roll (minimum 3.75 GPA) accolades five times. In addition, Fisher has garnered President’s Honor Roll (4.0 GPA) three times and was honored on the All-ACC Academic Team during her freshman campaign.

Currently ranked third in the women’s 400m hurdles and second on Miami’s 4x400m relay team, Runia is a three-time ACC Indoor Champion and a one-time ACC Outdoor Champion. She finished 15th overall at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400m hurdles and helped the Canes finish seventh overall. The Netherlands native boasts a 3.9 GPA in graphic design and has been named to numerous All-ACC Academic Teams in both indoor and outdoor track and has garnered USTFCCCA Academic honors for her work in the classroom. Runia has been named to the President’s List four times for earning a 4.0 GPA and is also a seven-time Book Buster Club honoree, Athletics Director Honor Roll, Dean’s List, Provost Honor Roll and Dean’s List recipient.

Wiefels is a three-year member of both the cross country and track and field teams and has represented the Canes in numerous ACC Championships. He not only excels on the track, but also in the classroom, boasting a 4.0 majoring in biochemistry. Wiefels is one of four cross country student-athletes with a perfect 4.0, helping the Canes’ men’s team boast a stellar 3.73 team GPA. Wiefels’ academic achievements have been rewarded as the Jupiter, Fla., native has been named a five-time Book Buster Club member, Athletics Director Honor Roll, Dean’s List, Provost Honor Roll and President’s List recipient.

A senior tri-captain of the Hurricanes and one of Miami’s top performers for all four of her seasons in Coral Gables, Yu has long been one of the Hurricanes’ most important leaders both in the locker room and in between the lanes. Yu, who arrived at The U as a walk-on student-athlete from her native Philippines, ranks among the program’s all-time performers in the backstroke and was an CSCAA Academic All-America honorable mention selection the past two seasons.

Yu, who has posted the fourth-best times in program history both the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke, represented her native Philippines at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, where she earned a bronze medal. Following graduation, Roxanne will return to the Philippines and continue to train in preparation for the 2019 South East Asian Games, which will mark the end of her swimming career.
