Rowing Wins at Head of the Indian Creek
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s rowing team kicked off the fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule on Saturday at the Head of the Indian Creek.
The Hurricanes had seven boats race on their home course in the regatta hosted by the Miami Beach Rowing Club. The annual Head of the Indian Creek is a 4,000-meter against the clock on the scenic Indian Creek in the heart of Miami Beach.
“The team showed good poise today staying focused on the fundamentals we’ve been working on,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The athletes have rehearsed how they want to race while at practice, so it was great to see their training guide them to some solid performances. We’ll get back at the training tomorrow and push on. “
Miami had three boats entered in the Women’s Open Collegiate 8+ event, with the “A” boat leading the way with a first-place finish with a time of 14 minutes and 17 seconds. Miami’s “B” boat was not far behind, placing third with a time of 14 minutes and 43 seconds, while the Canes’ “C” boat was fourth with a time of 15 minutes and 20 seconds.
The Hurricanes had four boats race in the Women’s Collegiate Champ 4+ event, with two of the four earning medals in the events. Miami “A” earned a silver medal after finishing second with a time of 15 minutes and 31 seconds, and Miami “D” took the bronze medal after it was third with a time of 16 minutes and 35 seconds. Miami “B” finished fourth (16:36 ) and Miami “C” placed sixth (17:12).
The spring session of racing begins with a two-day trip to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where Miami heads to the Cardinal Invitational on March 16-17. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
