PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team got back to her winning ways Friday at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.
After dropping her first match of the season Thursday, Perez-Somarriba received a bye through the opening round of the consolation draw. The junior then defeated No. 28 Julia Rosenqvist, 7-5, 6-0, at the Riviera Tennis Club to reach the draw’s semifinals.
“Estela did a good job today,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “Looking for another focused day tomorrow. She needs to keep learning from her wins and her losses, every time she steps on the tennis court.”
With the victory over Rosenqvist, who topped No. 14 Marie-Alexandre Leduc in her first match Friday, Perez-Somarriba is now 4-0 this fall against top-100 players with three top-50 victories.
Perez-Somarriba, who is competing in her second straight tournament in California after winning the elite Oracle ITA Masters singles crown, will continue play Saturday.
The Madrid native is set to take on No. 10 Michaela Gordon of Stanford at 1 p.m. ET with a consolation draw finale berth on the line. Perez-Somarriba and Gordon were seeded second and eighth, respectively, in the main draw.
