Rizzo Places Second at the BJ’s Charity Championship

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Entering her ninth season as the head coach for the University of Miami golf team, Patti Rizzo teamed up with Minnesota women’s golf head coach Michele Redman on the Legends Tour, as the duo looked to defend their title at the BJ’s Charity Championship.

The duo carded an eight-under 63, finishing tied for second at the Holly Ridge Golf Course in Sandwich, Mass., Friday morning.

“I just feel fortunate and always excited to play Legends Tour events. After retiring from the LPGA tour, it is still fun to compete and be able to rekindle the excitement of competitive golf,” Rizzo said. “There is such a difference between social golf and pressure golf. They are two completely different games. I love being nervous and the challenge of having my back against a wall. The true nature of an athlete comes out at that time. I wish we had more events to play!”

Rizzo and Redman combined to tally eight birdies over the 18-hole event on their way to the second place finish.

Rizzo originally joined the LPGA full-time in 1982 and was named the circuit’s Rookie of the Year, with five top-10 finishes, including fourth-place at the Arizona Copper Classic. In 1983, she won her first LPGA tournament at the Boston Five Classic and posted six additional top-10 finishes. Rizzo played on the tour regularly for 10 years, posting four tournament wins: the 1983 Boston Five Classic, the 1985 LPGA Corning Classic, the 1988 Sara Lee Classic and the 1989 Red Robin Kyocera Inamori Classic.

After a brief two-year retirement, she returned to play part-time on the LPGA and Legends Tours during the summer of 2006.

The Legends Tour is the official senior tour of the LPGA. The tour began in 2000 by LPGA professionals to showcase the talents of some of the greatest women’s golfers of all time. The Legends Tour has more than 120 members, including 14 LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame members. Legends Tour players have over 750 combined LPGA Tour victories, including 84 major championships.
