Dinsmore Captures Second Medal at FINA World Cup
WUHAN, China (USA Diving)— University of Miami redshirt junior David Dinsmore won the bronze medal in men’s 10-meter Sunday at the FINA World Cup to claim his second career World Cup 10-meter bronze and second medal this week.
Dinsmore, who also won the 10-meter bronze at the 2016 World Cup and won bronze with Krysta Palmer in the team event earlier this week, scored 489.80 points for third in Sunday’s final. He was in sixth place, 17.15 points out of third place, with two rounds to go. His last two dives, an inward 3 ½ tuck and a back 2 ½ somersaults with 2 ½ twists, scored 91.80 and 90.00 points to lift him to a spot on the podium. China’s Chen Aisen clinched gold with 557.80 points, while teammate Yang Jian was second at 537.40. Dinsmore’s performance also qualifies him for the 2019 FINA Diving World Series.
“Today I felt awesome. Anytime you get to go to the World Cup or World Championships is unbelievable,” Dinsmore said. “The fact that I got a medal today is incredible. We’ve worked very hard all season to get to this point. To end up on the podium is more than I can ask for.”
Brandon Loschiavo also advanced to the men’s 10-meter final and finished 11th, while Murphy Bromberg and Brooke Schultz tied for fifth in the women’s 3-meter synchro finals on the final day of competition.
Loschiavo struggled throughout the 10-meter final and finished 11th with 364.50 points after placing seventh in the semifinals. He was in 12th after the first two round before moving up to 11th in the third round with a back 3 ½ pike for 61.20 points. He had his highest score of the competition in the final round when he executed a back 2 ½ somersaults with 2 ½ twists for 81.00 points.
Bromberg and Schultz scored 274.80 points to tie Ukraine’s Viktoriya Kesar and Anna Pysmenska for fifth in the 3-meter synchro final. In sixth place after two round, the Americans moved up to fifth with a front 2 ½ somersaults with a twist for 63.00 points in the third round. The duo then made their way up to fourth in the following round before slipping back to fifth on a missed reverse 2 ½ pike for 57.60 points. China’s Shi Tingmao and Chang Yani won the gold medal with 334.80 points. Canada’s Jennifer Abel and Melissa Citrini-Beaulieu were second with 302.04 points, and Australia’s Esther Qin and Annabelle Smith scored 290.10 for bronze. By finishing fifth, Bromberg and Schultz also earned an opportunity to compete in next year’s World Series.
With the conclusion of the World Cup, Team USA earned two bronze medals and seven 2019 World Series spots. Palmer and Dinsmore brought Team USA a bronze medal in the team event, and each also earned World Series spots in the individual women’s 3-meter and the men’s 10-meter events.
The U.S. also qualified World Series spots in five synchronized events. In addition to Bromberg and Schultz earning a spot for the U.S. in women’s 3-meter synchro, Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman secured a spot in men’s 3-meter synchro.
Tarrin Gilliland and Jessica Parratto sealed a spot for the World Series in the women’s 10-meter platform synchro. Steele Johnson and Loschiavo also earned a spot in the men’s 10-meter platform. Zachary Cooper and Katrina Young qualified for the World Series in the 10-meter mixed synchro event,
The World Cup was also an opportunity for countries to qualify for the 2019 World Championships in the team event and the two mixed synchro events. The U.S. earned spots in all three events. Grayson Campbell and Maria Coburn also qualified the U.S. for a spot to compete in the World Championships, as they placed in the top-12 of the mixed 3-meter synchro.
