Canes Rowing Ready For Knecht Cup

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing team travels to New Jersey this weekend to race at the Knecht Cup.

The Hurricanes have three boats set to compete in the two-day regatta on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J. Miami head coach Dave Sanderson is looking forward to the competitive environment his team will be in this weekend as it prepares for next month’s ACC Rowing Championships.

“We are excited to return to Mercer County, N.J., to race at the Knecht Cup again this year,” Sanderson said. “It is always a great regatta for testing and developing our racing with great competition from across the country. The race format allows the opportunity to race through a progression of heats, semifinal, and final, so it has the feel of a championship regatta with an exciting atmosphere.”

Miami’s Varsity Four will be the first boat in action this weekend, racing at 8:34 a.m. Saturday out of Lane 6 in a Heat 3 field that includes George Mason, Boston University (LWT), Harvard-Radcliffe (LWT), UConn and Temple. The top three boats in each heat, as well as the next three fastest times will advance to the semifinal, while the remaining six boats will move on to the third level final.

The Canes’ First Varsity Eight will hit the water at 10:02 a.m., racing out of Lane 7 in Heat 2 of 4. Miami will compete against Jefferson, Villanova, Old Dominion and Kansas. The top three boats in each heat, as well as the next six fastest times will advance to the semifinal.

The Hurricanes’ Second Varsity Eight will race at 10:26 a.m. in Heat 1 of 2, facing off against Holy Cross, George Mason, Old Dominion, UConn, Boston College and UPenn. The top three times in each heat plus the next fastest time will advance to the grand final, while the remaining boats will advance to the petite final.
