Canes Rowing Closes Out Sunshine State Invite
SARASOTA, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing team had a pair of boats earn top-three finishes on the final day of competition at the 2018 Sunshine State Invite Saturday morning.
The First Varsity 8 opened the racing at 8 a.m. with a third-place finish, posting a time of 6:32.94.Miami’s Second Varsity 8 placed fifth with a time of 6:42.07. Miami’s First Varsity 4 closed out its weekend finishing fifth with a time of 7:27.05 and the Second Varsity 4 wrapped up the competition with a second place finish posting a time of 7:28.91.
“The team raced well today highlighted by a great row from the 1v eight and the 2v four,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “All of our boats were able to develop points of focus from the previous day of racing. We are looking forward to picking up more speed in practice this week and racing again next weekend.”
Miami had four boats in action Friday, and the First Varsity 8 finished fourth with a time of 6:38.32. The Hurricanes’ Second Varsity 4 was third in its race with a time of 7:39.30, while the First Varsity 4 placed fourth with a time of 7:32.46. Miami’s Second Varsity 8 was the final boat of the day and it finished fourth with a time of 6:47.82.
“The boats had solid races this afternoon,” Sanderson said after Friday’s racing. “Each crew had high points in their respective races that reflected what they had been working on in practices. This is always great to see. We are looking forward to tomorrow and the opportunity to keep working to put more pieces of a complete race together.”
The two-day regatta was held at the site of the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championships. The field for the event included Jacksonville University, Clemson, Southern Methodist University, University of Central Florida, Stetson and North Carolina.
Following this weekend’s racing, the Hurricanes will head to New Jersey to compete at the Knecht Cup on April 14-15. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
