Lonnie Walker IV Earns All-ACC Honors

Lonnie Walker IV Earns All-ACC Honors

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV has been named as an honorable mention selection to the 2018 All-ACC Team and also was voted to the ACC All-Freshman Team, as announced Sunday by the conference office. The team was chosen by a 57-member voting panel, consisting of the 15 ACC head coaches as well as 42 selected members of the media.

Walker is the first Miami freshman to earn a spot on an all-league team (BIG EAST and ACC). He is just the third Hurricane to be named to the five-man ACC All-Freshman Team, joining Durand Scott (2010) and Shane Larkin (2012).

Walker has had a standout rookie season, averaging 11.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in his 30 games (16 starts). He stepped up in ACC play, averaging 13.6 points per contest, including 15.1 points per game over Miami’s last 15 games.

He has come up with some clutch plays this season, including the game-tying layup in the final seconds of regulation in an overtime win over Louisville, the go-ahead 3-pointer in the waning seconds in a one-point win over Boston College and the game-tying field goal with under a minute to play in the win Saturday against Virginia Tech.

Walker has been named the ACC’s Rookie of the Week three times this season, second most of any ACC player this season to Duke’s Marvin Bagley III, who earned ACC Player of the Year honors on Sunday. Walker also was named to the All-ACC Academic Men’s Basketball Team last week.

Miami (22-8, 11-7 ACC) opens play at the 2018 ACC Tournament at approximately 9 p.m. Thursday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Hurricanes earned the tournament’s No. 3 seed and will play either No. 6 seed North Carolina, No. 11 seed Syracuse or No. 14 seed Wake Forest in the quarterfinals Thursday.
