Volleyball Opens Final Road Trip of Regular Season
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team will travel north this weekend to Virginia and Virginia Tech.
The Hurricanes (17-5, 11-5 ACC) will enter Friday’s contest at the UVA (7-20, 3-13 ACC) after going 2-0 in their final weekend of home play. The Canes were not at their best against Boston College on Thursday, but fought back from a 2-1 deficit and defeated the Eagles 3-2 for 14th straight win in the series. Miami improved to 5-1 in five-set contests.
Three days later, the Hurricanes looked more like their usual selves and sent out its five seniors – Alyssa Basdavanos, Sylvia Hernandez, Brooke McDermott, Sakile Simmons and Olga Strantzali – in style after defeating Syracuse, 3-1, at the James L. Knight Sports Complex. Miami had to play from behind once again after dropping the first set, 25-21, but tightened up defensively and won the remaining frames convincingly.
As a result of last week’s triumphs, the Canes enter the second-to-last weekend of ACC play tied with North Carolina for the fourth spot in the conference standings and two wins ahead of its next closest follower.
Neither Virginia, nor Virginia Tech (9-18, 3-13 ACC) won a set last weekend, both dropping straight-set contests to Louisville and Notre Dame. The Cavaliers are 5-8 at Memorial Gymnasium and have earned two of their three ACC victories on their home floor. The Hokies are 2-6 in Cassell Coliseum this season after defeating Clemson and Wake Forest for two of their three ACC wins.
The Canes will wrap up regular season play next week, when they visit Georgia Tech Wednesday and Clemson Friday. The selection show for the 2017 NCAA Championship is at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26.
