Hurricanes Rowing Wraps-up Competition at the Rivanna Romp
EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The University of Miami rowing team posted several strong performances Sunday at 2017 Rivanna Romp to conclude the fall portion of its fall season.
The University of Virginia played host to the event, which was held at the Rivanna Reservoir.
Miami raced seven boats in the regatta with three competing in the Varsity 8 race, three competing in the Varsity 4 race and one in the Novice 8. The Hurricanes’ Novice 8 boat highlighted the day, as they rowed to a third-place finish, posting a time of 14:40.9.
“The racing was competitive today, as expected,” head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Our Miami crews had some strong moments of racing, but the results certainty punctuate that we need more speed for the spring. Our freshman boat had the strongest finish today with a third-place in the freshman eight. It was a great row for them and we are definitely proud of their performance!”
Miami’s top finishing boat in the Varsity 8 race was its ‘A’ boat, which finished 12th in a time of 13:59.0. In the Varsity 4 race, the Hurricanes’ ‘A’ boat was Miami’s top finisher (15:30.5).
“Overall the team has made some progress this fall and we have seen our best speed over the last week,” Sanderson said. “From an internal speed perspective, results fall in line with what we have seen in practice.”
The Hurricanes competed against teams from Clemson, Columbia, Duke, Louisville, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
“The main reason for going to this race is so we can compete against some of the fastest boats in the ACC and see where we really stack up,” Sanderson said. “I didn’t want to speculate on what our speed might be as we look ahead to spring; it’s important that we know. We are all looking forward to getting back to training on Tuesday. We will continue to work to improve with our focus clearly on ACCs in May.”
