Cross Country Ready for NCAA South Regional
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami cross country team is headed to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the 2017 NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships Friday.
The Canes have 11 student-athletes entered in the championships, with six women in the 6K set to begin at 10 a.m. ET, and five men in the 10K at 11 a.m., ET. The 2017 NCAA South Regional will be held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park.
Seniors Nathan Kuck and Sean Grossman will lead the Hurricane men in Tuscaloosa. For Kuck, Grossman and fellow senior Adam George, Friday’s 10K will be their final time running at an NCAA South Regional.
Kuck added his name to the Miami record book with his 28th-place finish at the ACC Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky., two weeks ago. The graduate student set a school-record in the men’s 8K running a time of 24:09.2.
Grossman, who held the Miami record in the men’s 8K prior to Kuck’s performance at the 2017 conference meet, has had a strong senior season. The Dix Hills, N.Y., native has teamed with Kuck to push the Hurricane men to one of the team’s best seasons in history. The senior trio will be joined by Sean Hagert and Jacob Triarsi at the NCAA South Regional.
On the women’s side, freshman Maryam Jawid will compete in her first regional championship meet with hopes to climb the ladder of Miami’s all-time list. Jawid is currently ranked sixth in UM history in the women’s 5K and has been the Hurricanes’ top female runner this season.
Anne den Otter will be making her third appearance at the South Regional Championship meet this year. The junior has been a steady performer in 2017 and will use her experience to lead a talented, but young women’s group that includes Abby Kettle, Emma Langlois, Carla Rodriguez and Simone Vreeland in Tuscaloosa.
