Kuck Sets School Record at ACC XC Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Nathan Kuck’s top 30 finish led the Miami Hurricanes at the 2017 ACC Cross Country Championships.

The Canes had 13 student-athletes compete in the conference meet, with seven entries in the men’s 8K and six women in the 6K. Miami’s men turned in their best finish at the ACC Championships in a decade, while the Hurricane women showed promise at the conference meet.

“The men raced phenomenally today,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “I challenged them to leave the course with no regrets, and I feel they did that today.”

Like he has all season, Kuck was the top Hurricane on the men’s side. The senior finished 28th overall with a personal-best time of 24:09.2 that set a new school record. Kuck’s 28th place finish is the highest individual finish in program history.

“I couldn’t be happier with the results from today,” Kuck said. “Everyone from 1-7 ran their hearts out and it’s been an honor to help lead this team to the best performance at the conference meet in 10 years.”

Fellow senior Sean Grossman, who previously held the UM record in the men’s 8K, finished 55th overall with a time of 24:40.1.  Sean Hagert, Adam George, Jacob Triarsi, Dylan Sykes and Matthew Wiefels rounded out Miami’s men, who placed 13th with 370 points to give the Canes their best finish in program history.

“Nathan has exceeded all expectations this season,” Griffiths said. “And Grossman, Hagert, and George were able to close hard in the latter miles. I am so elated that the men saved their best effort for today.”

On the women’s side, freshman Maryam Jawid led the Canes with a 66th place finish with a time of 21:46.6 that ranks fifth in the women’s 6K in UM history. Junior Anne den Otter was the next Hurricane to cross the finish line, posting a time of 22:50.7. Emma Langlois, Carla Rodriguez, Abby Kettle and Olivia Raymond completed the group of women that combined to finish 15th with 461 points.

“Maryam ran a solid race today,” Griffiths said. “We fell short of our goal on the women’s side, but we are a young group and time to improve.”
