Two Canes Remain at ITA Southeast Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team split its eight matches Saturday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle.
The Hurricanes went 4-3 in singles play and dropped their lone doubles match on their second day of competition at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Action began with Miami’s lone doubles pair, sixth-seeded sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba and junior Ana Madcur, falling to FIU’s Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler, 5-8.
The lone Hurricane left in the singles main draw, No. 11 Perez-Somarriba recorded her second ranked victory of the fall. The top-seeded player in the field downed No. 111 Nami Otsuka of Georgia Tech, seeded No. 10, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
By earning a berth in the main draw quarterfinals, Perez-Somarriba is now eligible for an at-large berth to the elite Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, Calif.
Miami’s only player in the first round consolation draw, sophomore Dominika Paterova, dropped a 3-6, 3-6 decision to Damira Muminovic of Georgia State.
Both Madcur and freshman Ulyana Shirokova opened the second round consolation draw with triumphs. The former beat North Florida’s Luise Intert, 6-4, 6-3, and the latter topped Florida’s Peggy Porter, 6-2, 6-4.
Meanwhile, sophomore Sara Culbertson came up on the short end of a 4-6, 3-6 decision against Nandini Das of Florida State.
Madcur dropped her quarterfinal match to Ana Roman Dominguez of USF, 5-7, 4-6, while Shirokova defeated Das, 6-3, 6-2.
Perez-Somarriba is set to take on No. 93 Brooke Austin of Florida, seeded fifth, Sunday at 10 a.m., with a berth in the main draw semifinals on the line.
At the same time, Shirokova will square off against Roman Dominguez at the same time in the semifinals of the second round consolation draw.
