Cross Country Canes Excel at USF Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Miami cross country program impressed in its final test before the ACC Cross Country Championships, competing at the USF Invitational on Friday.

The Hurricanes has five men finish in the top 25 in the men’s 8K, while three women earned top 20 finishes in their 5K. Miami was one of 16 schools racing on the course at The Claw golf course on the USF campus.

“I feel that that both groups raced well today with the constant rain and wet course,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “But we also left here knowing that we could have raced smarter.”

Nathan Kuck led the Hurricane men, winning the 8K with a time of 25:36.4. Fellow senior Sean Grossman finished third overall with a time of 25:50.4, while junior Sean Hagert placed 15th with a time of 27:16.1. Senior Adam George (23rd, 27:39.1) and freshman Jacob Triarsi (24th, 27:41.8) gave Miami five finsihers in the top 25, while Matthew Wiefels and Dylan Sykes also ran for the Canes.

“We wanted to simulate the first early miles for conference conditions,” Griffiths said. “Nathan ran dominant from the start and cruised to victory. Sean battled to the end to just miss the 1-2 sweep.”

Maryam Jawid continued her outstanding freshman season, finishing second overall with a time of 18:07.0. Junior Anne den Otter gave Miami two finishers in the top 10, as she posted a time of 18:56.8 to finish ninth.

“Maryam and Anne continue to be constant leaders for us,” Griffiths said. “Maryam made a run at the victory, but came up a little short.”

Freshman Emma Langlois also turned in an impressive performance, placing 17th overall with a time of 19:22.2, while Simone Vreeland (19:56.4) and Carla Rodriguez (20:07.9) rounded out Miami’ top five women. Daria Pietropaolo, Molly Rickles, Sophia Corde and Lauren Stolz also ran for the Hurricane women.

“We have to get more out of the next group in two weeks if we want to accomplish our team goals,” Griffiths said.
