Volleyball Heads West For a Pair of ACC Matches
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team will play its first road Atlantic Coast Conference contests of the season, visiting Notre Dame and Louisville this weekend.
The Hurricanes began conference play at home last weekend, downing Virginia Tech and Virginia in multiple-set matches – 3-1 and 3-2, respectively. With the victories, Miami goes into the weekend as one of the four unbeaten teams in the country.
Miami had quite the weekend last time it traveled to the westernmost points of ACC territory, winning five-setters against both the Irish and the Cardinals. The win against Louisville was monumental for senior outside hitter Olga Strantzali, whose 30 kills in that match historically rank as second-most by a Hurricane in a single match.
Both Miami opponents played two five-setters apiece last weekend. The Cardinals came from behind to prevail over the Irish at home Friday. Two days later, Louisville lost to NC State to fall to 7-5 on the season, while Notre Dame fell to defending ACC champion North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. On Sunday afternoon, Notre Dame suffered a defeat at NC State, making it the first time this season that the Irish lost back-to-back matches. At the same time, Louisville led 2-0 sets, but could not hold on for an upset against the Tar Heels, dropping to 7-5 this season.
The Hurricanes will not return home for long after this weekend and will hit the road again next Wednesday to face rival Florida State in Talahassee, Fla.
