CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team posted a 7-3 record Saturday at the Miami Fall Invite on its first full day of competition in the 2017-18 season.
The Hurricanes had just one match finish Friday as a result of inclement weather, but made the most of an extended schedule on the second day of the event at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Miami went 4-1 in its five doubles matches and junior Ana Madcur led the way in singles, posting a top-10 triumph for the first time in her career.
Action began at 10 a.m., one hour later than planned due to wet courts, with the resumption of five doubles match from Friday, two of which featured the Hurricanes facing Pittsburgh.
Madcur and sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba opened doubles play by giving Miami its first victory of the season. The duo posted 6-3 win over Jovana Knezevic and Gabriela Rezende.
Shortly thereafter, junior Daniella Roldan and freshman Ulyana Shirokova earned a win in their first match as Hurricanes, logging a 7-5 triumph against Camila Moreno and Luisa Varon.
Madcur’s scintillating victory highlighted the singles slate for Miami that includes five matches against players from Auburn. The San Juan, Argentina, notched the third ranked win of her career, taking down Alizee Michaud, ranked ninth in the country.
After needing just seven games to win the first set, Madcur dropped the second, but won a third-set tiebreaker to earn the 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win. The prior highest-ranked opponent Madcur defeated was against former teammate Wendy Zhang, who was No. 73 nationally at the time.
Roldan, a transfer from Texas, also won her first singles match at Miami, defeating Madeline Meredith, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Sara Culbertson got in the win column to open her fall campaign, edging Mary Katherine Lewis, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 11 Perez-Somarriba dropped a 3-6, 1-6 decision to Jaeda Daniel and Shirokova fell to Caroline Turner, 6-4, 3-6, 0-1 (8-10).
In a second round of doubles play Saturday, both Miami duos that won in the morning earned another victory, each by identical 6-1 score against pairs from FGCU.
Madcur and Perez-Somarriba defeated Bridget Forster and Maja Ornberg, while Roldan and Shirokova topped Julia Ascua and Madison Gallegos. Additionally, Culbertson and sophomore Sarah Danquah came up short against FGCU’s Laura Falceto Font and Patricia Villar, 4-6.
Play will resume Sunday at 9 a.m., for the final day of the Miami Fall Invite. The Hurricanes are set to face Auburn in doubles to begin the morning and then meet Pittsburgh in singles. Time permitting, Miami will then take on FGCU in another round of singles action.
