Miami Track Earns 11 All-America Honors
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program received 11 All-America honors following the conclusion of the 2017 NCAA outdoor track and field season, as announced Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Miami earned five First Team All-America honors, two Second Team All-America distinctions and had four student-athletes receive All-America honorable mention. First-team honors went to those athletes from individual events and relay teams that finished 1st through 8th, while those who finished 9th through 16th nabbed second-team billing. Honorable mention was given to those who finished 17th through 24th.
Shakima Wimbley headlines the Hurricanes receiving All-America honors, picking up a pair of First Team awards and an honorable mention selection.
The senior standout, who was named South Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and is on The Bowerman Award Watch list, earned First Team All-America in both the 400m and the 4x400m relay. Wimbley was the national runner-up in the 400m, finishing second in the final with a time off 50.68 seconds.
Wimbley also anchored the Hurricanes’ 4x400m relay to a seventh place finish with a time of 3:28.90, securing the relays third straight First Team All-America distinction. Anna Runia, Aiyanna Stiverne and Brittny Ellis joined Wimbley on Miami’s 4x400m relay and each was named First Team All-America for their efforts.
Stiverne also picked up Second Team All-America honors after the senior finished 14th overall in the women’s 400m with a time of 53.25 seconds. Fellow senior Ebony Morrison was the second Hurricane receiving Second Team All-America recognition, as she finished 14th overall in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.29 seconds.
Miami’s 4x100m relay team of Carolyn Brown, Wimbley, Stiverne and Kristina Knott received All-America honorable mention after reaching the NCAA outdoor Championships in their event.
As a team, the Hurricane women closed out the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships tied for 21st with 10 team points. Wimbley contributed eight points for her second place finish in the 400m final, while the 4x400m relay added two points to the total team tally.
