Miami Signs Four Rowers in Spring Signing Period
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing team welcomed the newest members of the Hurricanes rowing family this spring, signing four future Canes to National Letters of Intent.
The Hurricanes signed four incoming freshmen rowers during the spring signing period, and all are expected to make an impact for the Canes.
“The coaching staff and I are thrilled to welcome our latest signees to the fall 2017 class,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “They will be a great addition to an already exciting class. They bring a ton of racing, training and leadership qualities to the team and we can’t wait to get them into the classrooms and on the water in the fall.”
Savannah Alario | Rower | Sarasota, Fla. | The Out-of-Door Academy| Sarasota Crew
Alario will stay in the Sunshine State to continue her rowing career. A standout for Sarasota Crew, Alario helped her boat place 18th in the Women’s Varsity 8+ at the 2016 Head of the Charles Regatta. She also qualified for USRowing Youth Nationals in the Women’s Varsity 4+ and won first place at Florida Sculling States in 2015 in the junior quad.
“We are excited about Savannah’s experience in a premier Florida rowing program,” Sanderson said. “She has raced and trained in many boat classes and we are looking forward to her versatility strengthening the team.”
Laura Alcorn | Rower | Valley Forge, Pa. | Conestoga High School
Alcorn has been a standout rower at Conestoga High School, leading the team to three consecutive Stotesbury Cup titles from 2014-16. Alcorn earned the trust and respect of her teammates, who elected her team captain. She also competed at Youth Nationals as a sophomore, proving her ability as a top rower at a young age.
“Laura is a three-time Stotesbury champion in three tries and is a captain on her team,” Sanderson said. “Her experience crossing the line first and her leadership experience will be hugely positive for the team.”
Rebecca Camplin | Rower | Fenwick, Ontario, Canada | E.L. Crossley Secondary School | South Niagara Rowing Club
Camplin has excelled on the water for both her school’s team at E.L. Crossley Secondary School and at the South Niagara Rowing Club. The Canada native won first place at The Stotesbury Cup in the women’s lightweight 4+ in both 2015 and 2016. She also won first place at the Schoolboy Regatta in 2016 in the lightweight 4+ and lightweight 2x. Camplin took second place at USRowing Club Nationals in 2016 in the intermediate lightweight 4x and won the senior women’s lightweight event at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships in 2015-16.
“Rebecca has an incredible training ethic and has rowed many miles in small boats,” Sanderson said. “She comes to us with high aspirations to help her Miami Hurricane boats compete at NCAAs, as well as her future plans for national team racing.”
Marilou Chardin | Rower | Villers-Bocage, France | Lycée du Sacré-Cœur | Sport Nautique Amiens
Chardin will continue her rowing career at Miami after excelling for Sport Nautique Amiens in her native France. She won the single sculls event at the Head of the River in Picardie in 2016 and finished sixth in the straight four at the Senior French League Cup. Chardin also took fourth place in the coxed four at the U15 French National Championship.
“Marilou comes to us from France, where she has primarily raced in smaller boats,” Sanderson said. “We were instantly struck with her positive attitude and love for the sport. She is a racer through and through and we can’t wait to have her in Miami fighting for The U.”
Alario, Alcorn, Camplin and Chardin join Fiona Aronson, Julia Giannotta, Kathleen Hanson, Emily Kean and Morgan Sherman as members of the incoming rowing class that is set to join the Hurricanes prior to the 2017-18 academic year.
