SARASOTA, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing team closed out competition at the Sunshine State Invitational Saturday.

The Hurricanes had five boats in action in the two-day regatta at Nathan Benderson Park, which will host the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championship. The field featured four Florida squads in Miami, UCF, Jacksonville and Stetson. Alabama, Kansas State, North Carolina and Tulsa also lined up on the water.

“The team saw another round of excellent racing from excellent competition,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “The 2V8+ was in another close race situation and, although they didn’t finish where they wanted, they learned some really valuable lessons and see room to get faster. The varsity 8 had a great piece where they clearly executed their race better than the day before. They showed great resilience today. Our novice eight and two fours each improved their racing today, but we still need to search for more speed.”

Miami’s varsity 8 kicked off the morning’s racing with a second place finish behind host UCF, crossing the line with a time of 6:37.12. The 2V8+ also turned in a strong performance, finishing second to UCF with a time of 6:50.2

The Hurricanes’ novice 8 finished sixth in its final race of the weekend with a time of 7:29.9, while the 1V4+ also placed sixth in its last race with a time of 7:58.2. The 2V4+ closed out the day’s racing with a time of 8:00.50 to place eighth in its race.

Friday’s competition featured a stellar showing by Miami’s top two varsity 8 boats. Miami’s 2V8+ was the top finisher of the five Hurricane boats in action, earning a victory in their first race of the weekend with a time of 6:51.5. The Canes’ 2V8+ finished ahead of Kansas State, UCF, North Carolina, Alabama, Jacksonville, Stetson and Tulsa.

The Hurricanes’ varsity 8 also has a solid showing in its first race of the weekend, finishing fourth with a time of 6:41.2. Miami just missed the top three in its event on Friday, finishing behind UCF, Tulsa and Alabama.

Miami’s varsity 4 finished seventh with a time of 8:03.5, while the 2V4+ was eighth in its race with a time of 8:04.9. The Hurricanes’ novice 8+ placed seventh with a time of 7:33.03.

Following this weekend’s action at the Sunshine State Invitational, the Canes will head to New Jersey to race at the Knecht Cup on April 8-9. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
