Miami Opens Play in the Briar’s Creek Invitational on Monday

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 15-ranked University of Miami women’s golf team returns to action on Monday, following a two-week break, to take part in the 2017 Briar’s Creek Invitational in Kiawah Island, S.C.

THE BASICS
-The tournament will follow a 54-hole format.
-College of Charleston is the tournament host.
-The tournament will be played at the par 72, 6,101-yard, Golf Club at Briar’s Creek.
-Play begins at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start on Monday with 36 holes. Play concludes on Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start.

THE WORD ON THE CANES
The Miami women’s golf team has been a model of consistency throughout the 2016-17 season as it has finished in the top three in five of its seven tournaments this year. The Hurricanes are coming off a fourth-place finish on March 1 at the Hurricane Invitational.

Miami enters this week’s Briar’s Creek Invitational with a team average of 289.10 strokes per round.
The Hurricanes posted an impressive 2016 fall season during which they posted three top-three finishes, including a dominating performance at the Mary Fossum Invitational, as Miami won by 40 strokes. The Hurricanes finished the fall campaign with a 286.22 team average.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The University of Miami women’s golf team fired a Day 3 score of 286 and finished the tournament with a total of 877 to finish fourth at the Hurricane Invitational.

Miami’s final day score of 286 was its lowest single-day total over the course of the three-day event.  
Senior Delfina Acosta led the way for Miami as she tied for ninth with a tournament total of 217. Her top-10 finish was her second of the season and her first of the spring. 
 
DEWI CONTINUES TO DOMINATE
The Canes are led by sophomore standout Dewi Weber, who has posted top-10 finishes in eight of her last 10 tournaments dating back to the 2016 spring season. Weber is currently ranked No. 12 by Golfstat.com and is the fifth-highest ranked golfer in the ACC.

Additionally, Weber claimed individual crowns at two of the three tournaments in the fall, winning outright titles at the Mary Fossum Invitational and the Betsy Rawls Invitational.

THE LINEUP
Dewi Weber
-Averaging a team-best 71.56 heading into this week’s tournament.
-Tied for third at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
-Tied for sixth at the Florida Challenge.
-Won medalist honors at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Captured medalist honors at the Fossum Invitational.
-2016 NCAA National Runner-up.

Filippa Moork
-Has posted a scoring average of 73.10.
-Placed 21st last week at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
-Tied for 12th at the Betsy Rawls Invitational to close out the fall season.
-Tied for 20th at the Jim West Challenge.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s roster.

Delfina Acosta
-Has posted a scoring average of 73.71.
-Posted her best finish of the spring at the Hurricane Invitational on March 1 as she tied for ninth.  
-Tied for 35th at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
-Tied for 14th at the Florida Challenge to open the spring season.
-Tied for 15th at the Jim West Challenge.
-Opened the 2016-17 season by finishing third at the Fossum Invitational.  
-The only senior on this year’s roster.

Renate Grimstad
-Owns a scoring average of 74.45.
-Tied for third at UCF Challenge to lead the team.
-Tied for sixth at the Florida Challenge.
-Posted a season-low 69 in the final round of play at the Jim West Challenge.
-Tied for 22nd at the Fossum Invitational.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s roster.

Macarena Aguilera
-Has totaled a scoring average of 75.00.
-Tied for 47th at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
-Tied for 35th at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Tied for 44th at the Fossum Invitational in her Miami debut.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s roster.
