@CanesRowing Starts Fast at Cardinal Invitational

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The University of Miami rowing team had a double dose of racing on the opening day of the sixth annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational.

Miami had five boats in action at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue, competing in both a morning and afternoon session of racing to kick off their 2017 spring season.

“Day 1 of our 2017 racing season provided great racing opportunities for our crews to develop and improve,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Our novices got their first race under their belt with a great first row. Our varsity 8 led the day with a fantastic “row from behind” performance in the first race and a strong, confident second place in our second race. Each boat will make some small adjustments for tomorrow with the goal to keep improving.”

Miami raced out of Lane 5 in the morning session, facing off against Tulsa, Minnesota and Tennessee. The varsity 8 won its first race of the weekend, posting a time of 6:36.900. Miami’s 1V4+ finished fourth with a time of 8:14.126, while the novice 8 placed third with a time of 7:29.170. The Hurricanes’ 2V8+ and 2V4+ each finished fourth in their opening races of the weekend, posting times of 7:08.909 and 8:33.060, respectively.

The afternoon session put the Canes in Lane 3 against boats from Virginia, Louisville and Tulsa and the varsity 8 turn in another strong performance, finishing second with a time of 6:43.264. Miami’s 1V4+ finished fourth with a time of 8:11.448, while the novice 8 was fourth with a time of 7:47.246. The Hurricanes’ 2V8+ (7:16.073) and the 2V4+ (8:24.794) each finished fourth in its respective race.

Sunday will be the final race for each of Miami’s boats and the Canes will run out of Lane 4 against Kansas, Clemson and Minnesota. The varsity 8 hits the water at 10:18 a.m., followed by the 1V4+ at 10:26 a.m., and the novice 8 at 10:34 a.m. The Hurricanes’ 2V8+ will race at 10:42 a.m., and the 2V4+ will close out the weekend at 10:50 a.m.

Following this weekend’s action at the Cardinal Invitational, the Canes will head to the Governor’s Cup in Fellsmere, Fla., on March 18. For a complete look at Miami’s schedule, click here.
