@HurricanesGolf Opens the Spring Season at the Florida Challenge

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 14-ranked University of Miami women’s golf team will open the spring portion of its 2016-17 schedule on Monday as it travels to Lecanto, Fla., to compete in the Florida Challenge.

THE BASICS
-The tournament will follow a 36-hole format.

THE WORD ON THE CANES
The Hurricanes will look to build off an impressive 2016 fall season where they posted three top three finishes, including a dominating performance at the Mary Fossum Invitational, as Miami won by 40 strokes. Miami finished the fall campaign with a 286.22 team average.
Miami captured the team title at the 2015 Florida Challenge.

DEWI CONTINUES TO DOMINATE
The Canes are led by sophomore standout Dewi Weber, who posted top 10 finishes in all three tournaments during the fall season. Additionally, Weber claimed the individual crown at two of the three tournaments, winning outright titles at the Mary Fossum Invitational and the Betsy Rawls Invitational.

THE LINEUP
Dewi Weber
-Won medalist honors at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Captured medalist honors at the Fossum Invitational.
-2016 NCAA National Runner-up.

Filippa Moork
-Tied for 12th to close out the fall season at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Tied for 20th at the Jim West Challenge.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s roster.

Delfina Acosta
-Tied for 15th at the Jim West Challenge.
-Opened the 2016-17 season by finishing third at the Fossum Invitational.  
-The only senior on this year’s roster.

Renate Grimstad
-Posted a season-low 69 in the final round of play at the Jim West Challenge.
-Tied for 22nd at the Fossum Invitational.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s roster.

Macarena Aguilera
-Tied for 35th at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
-Tied for 44th at the Fossum Invitational in her Miami debut.
-One of three freshmen on this year’s roster.

DARQUEA GOES PRO
Miami will open the spring season without the services of Daniela Darquea, who following the 2016 fall campaign, elected to pursue a professional career on the LPGA Tour.

Darquea leaves Miami following an impressive collegiate career where she captured three ACC All-Conference honors. She closes out her career with 17 top 10 finishes and three tournament individual championships.

The Quito, Ecuador native, burst on the scene as a freshman in 2013 as she posted five Top 10 finishes en route to becoming Miami’s first All-American since Julie Brand in 1994.
Off the course, Darquea was equally impressive as she was named to the ACC All-Academic team in each of her three years at Miami. Following the 2015-16 season, Darquea was selected as the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
