Diving Turning In Strong Showing at Winter Nationals

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Miami diving team continued its strong run at the 2016 USA Diving Winter National Championships, which concludes Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Redshirt freshman David Dinsmore highlighted Monday’s action with the top finish among all American divers in the 10-meter semifinal. Dinsmore finished with 882.45 points, behind only Zhipeng Zeng (933.00).

2016 Olympian Sam Dorman, who earned a silver medal in the synchronized 3-meter event this past summer in Rio, took home the bronze medal of the 1-meter event Monday. Dorman led after preliminary rounds, but Olympic synchro teammate Michael Hixon took gold and Steele Johnson earned silver.

Junior Briadam Herrera took fifth in the 1-meter with a score of 760.15.

Herrera, who finished the 3-meter event in third with a score of 772.60, will compete in Tuesday’s finals of the event.

Not to be outdone, junior Wally Layland impressed in the 1-meter in Ohio. Layland finished sixth in the finals with a score of 482.75.

Action from the USA Diving Winter Nationals continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
