Miami Athletics Continues Its Strong Work in the Classroom
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami student-athletes posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 90 percent. The figures released by the NCAA show that the Hurricanes are above the national average of 84 percent. Miami’s GSR rate is tied for 15th among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions.
“The University of Miami has a strong commitment of excellence to our student-athletes in the classroom and the latest GSR numbers reflect that commitment,” said Director of Athletics Blake James. “Our graduation success rate is a testament our students’ hard work and dedication. I could not be more proud of our student-athletes, our coaches and our academic support staff for placing a strong emphasis on education.”
The Miami men’s diving and women’s golf teams continued their consistent perfection with 100 percent GSR scores for the 12th consecutive year.
The Hurricane women’s volleyball program also continued its string of success in the classroom, earning a 100 percent GSR for the sixth consecutive season. The Miami women’s swimming and diving program also maintained its perfect GSR rate for a fifth consecutive year.
“I could not be more excited about the success of our student-athletes in the classroom,” said Associate AD for Academic Services, David Wyman. “Academics is a priority for our athletics staff and for our student-athletes and is a reflection of our high academic standards at the University of Miami.”
Miami’s women’s soccer posted a GSR of 100 percent for the first time since 2007, while the football and men’s basketball teams posted GSR scores of 86 and 91 percent respectively – both above the national average.
The men’s basketball team’s 91 percent GSR is tied for 18th among FBS schools, while the football team’s 86 percent GSR is tied for 14th among FBS institutions.
The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2006-2007 through 2009-10, comprising more than 110,000 student-athletes.
The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) was developed in response to college and university presidents suggesting that graduation data more accurately reflect the mobility among college students today. The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained. The NCAA began compiling the GSR with the entering class of 1995.
