Canes XC Ready for ACC Championships

CARY, N.C. – The University of Miami cross country team will compete against conference foes at the 2016 ACC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships on Friday.

The ACC Cross Country Championships will be held at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The women’s 6k race will start at 10 a.m., followed by the men’s 8k competition at 10:45 a.m. Both championships will be carried live on ACC Network Extra. 

“I feel that we are as prepared as we can be for this meet,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “It will take each runner accepting their role for us to have success this meet. Mental and physical toughness will be needed in the latter stages of these races for us to be successful.”

The Hurricanes head to the ACC Championships fresh off an impressive performance at the Miami Duals. Miami’s men’s team had a perfect score of 15, taking the top five individual places in the men’s 5K, while the women earned the top four spots in the women’s 5K en route to a victory.

Sean Grossman led Miami’s men with a victory at the Miami Duals, crossing the finish line in 16:10.5. Jon Keller (16:18.2), Nick Kaleel (16:25.5), Michael Miano (16:37.7) and Tom Gassner (16:51.2) followed to give Miami a perfect score of 15, as the Hurricanes took the top five places in the race.

Gabrielle Hesslau continued to be the top female runner for the Hurricanes, winning the women’s 5K at the Miami Duals with a time of 18:29.0. The senior was followed by three of her teammates, as Anne Den Otter finished second (18:59.3), Mulloy Manning placed third (19:53.3) and Carla Rodriguez was fourth (20:17.8).

Following the ACC Cross Country Championships, the Hurricanes will turn their attention to the NCAA Regional Championships slated for Nov. 11 in Tallahassee, Fla., with the NCAA Championships taking place on Nov. 19 in South Bend, Ind.
