@CanesRowing Shines on the Indian Creek
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami rowing team earned wins in each of its two races at the Head of the Indian Creek Sunday.
The Hurricanes, who opened their fall schedule with a scrimmage against Barry University on Sept. 24, had eight boats race on their home course Sunday in the regatta hosted by the Miami Beach Rowing Club. The annual Head of the Indian Creek is a 2.7-mile race against the clock on scenic Indian Creek in the heart of Miami Beach.
“Our athletes raced well and it was good to get some race experience before the [Head of the] Charles,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “We know we can pick up more speed this week and can’t wait to get back out on the water to improve.”
Five varsity four boats were on the water first for Miami, with the Hurricanes’ ‘A’ boat winning the Women’s Collegiate Champ 4+ final with a time of 17:41.686. Miami ‘D’ finished fourth with a time of 18:16.354, followed by Miami ‘E’ (18:33.462), Miami ‘B’ (18:50.074) and Miami ‘C’ (20:23.414).
The Hurricanes were also victorious in the Women’s Collegiate Champ 8+ race, as Miami ‘B’ crossed the finish line with a time of 15:58.630. A Hurricane boat also finished second in the event with Miami ‘A’ turning in a time of 16:01.686. Miami ‘C’ placed fourth with a time of 17:56.034.
Following this Sunday’s racing, Miami travels to the prestigious Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass., on Oct. 22-23 and will wrap up the fall with a home regatta against UCF on Nov. 4.
The spring session of racing will begin with a scrimmage in February before kicking into high gear on March 11-12 at the Cardinal Invite in Chattanooga, Tenn. A week later, the Canes will travel to Fellsmere, Fla., to race against Columbia and Florida Tech on March 18.
Miami will compete at a regatta in Sarasota, Fla., the weekend of March 31-April 1 before heading to the Knecht Cup on April 8-9. The Canes will travel to UCF on April 29 for their final competitive races before the ACC Championships, scheduled for May 13-14 in Clemson, S.C. The NCAA Rowing Championships are slated for May 26-28 at Lake Mercer in Windsor, N.J.
