@CanesTrack Women Ranked 15th After ACCs

NEW ORLEANS – A stellar showing at the 2016 ACC Outdoor Championships helped the University of Miami’s women’s track and field team move up two spots to No. 15 in the latest edition of the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings.

The 15th-ranked Hurricanes are the highest ranked of two ACC teams to appear in the USTFCCCA top 25. Miami has appeared in every edition of the USTFCCCA rankings during the outdoor season, peaking at No. 13 four weeks ago. The Canes also are the highest ranked ACC women’s team in the USTFCCCA outdoor top 25 for the seventh-consecutive week and eighth time this year.

The National Team Computer Rankings are compiled by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists. Miami has nine different marks that contributed to its team score of 124.76 points.

Six of Miami’s nine marks come from this past weekend’s ACC Outdoor Championships, where the Hurricanes finished second with 88 points.

Shakima Wimbley is a major factor for Miami, contributing to four of the nine scored marks. The 2016 ACC Women’s Track MVP scored 25 points for the Canes at the conference meet. Wimbley won her third consecutive ACC outdoor 200m title, running a time of 22.56 seconds. The junior also defended her ACC outdoor 400m title with a gold medal-winning time of 50.90 seconds that ranks third in the NCAA.

Wimbley was also a key member of both of Miami’s ACC champion relays. She teamed with Carolyn Brown, Aiyanna Stiverne and Ebony Morrison to run a school-record time of 43.63 seconds in the women’s 4x100m relay. Wimbley also anchored Miami’s 4x400m relay to victory as the Hurricanes turned in a season-best time of 3:30.61 to set a meet record. The junior teamed with Washington, Stiverne and freshman Brittny Ellis to win the conference title.

Like WImbley, Stiverne contributes on four of Miami’s scored marks in the latest team score. The junior earned a bronze medal in the 200m with a personal-best time of 23.22 seconds and picked up another bronze medal in the 400m with a personal-best time of 52.08 seconds that ranks fourth in UM history

Additionally, Morrison’s personal-best 100m hurdles time of 13.00 seconds from the Tom Jones Invitational rounds out Miami’s scored marks from the track.

The Canes also have two scored marks from the field events. ACC pole vault champion Alysha Newman’s school record mark of 4.60m from the Hurricane Alumni Invitational ranks third in the country. Fellow senior Dakota Dailey-Harris’ school record of 1.85m in the women’s high jump is sixth in the country.

While the ACC Championships have concluded, several Hurricanes will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 26-28 for the right to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., from June 8-11.
