@CanesTrack Ready for Tom Jones Meet
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program is back in action this Friday, competing at the Tom Jones Memorial Meet.
The Hurricanes return to Percy Beard Track on the University of Florida campus for the second time this season after previously competing at the Florida Relays from March 31-April 2. The Tom Jones Memorial Meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with the men’s hammer, women’s discus, women’s pole vault and women’s long jump. Running events are set to kick off at 1 p.m., with the women’s 100m hurdles preliminaries.
Miami heads to Gainesville off a bye week in which it trained in preparation for the back end of the 2016 outdoor season. The Canes had previously competed four consecutive weeks, including three home meets: the Hurricane Invitational, the Hurricane Twilight Invitational and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational.
The 13th-ranked Hurricane women head into this weekend’s meet as the top-ranked team in the ACC. Miami’s women will be led by a host of contributors including NCAA pole vault leader Alysha Newman, ACC 400m leader Shakima Wimbley and ACC high jump leader Dakota Dailey-Harris. The Canes will also feature outstanding athletes like hurdler Ebony Morrison, sprinter Aiyanna Stiverne and throwers Precious Ogunleye and Tiffany Okieme.
On the men’s side, Miami will look for jumpers John-Patrick Friday and Innocent Jacob, as well as throwers Gian Piero Ragonesi, Carlos Mangum and Isaiah Simmons, to lead the way. Ragonesi is the ACC leader in the shot put and ranks third in discus, while Friday and Jacob each have jumps that rank in the top three in the conference. Mangum and Simmons are also two of the top throwers in the conference and will look to continue their success this weekend. Miami will also have sprinters Isaiah Taylor, Henri Delauze and Jaalen Jones looking to make some noise on the track in Gainesville Friday.
Following this weekend’s action in Gainesville, the Hurricanes will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the LSU Invitational. The meet at LSU will be Miami’s final competition before the ACC Outdoor Championships on May 13-15.
