MERCER COUNTY, N.J. — The University of Miami rowing program had a strong start to the 2016 Knecht Cup.

The Hurricanes had six of its 11 boats advance at the 2016 Knecht Cup, scheduled for April 9-10 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J. Three boats have qualified for the Grand Final, while two will compete in the Petite Final and one is in the Semi-Finals and looking to continue advancing on Sunday.

Miami had three of its four pairs advance to the final in the Women’s Varsity Pair event. Alison Whitty and Taegan Lynch teamed up to for Miami ‘A’, winning Heat 1 of three with a time of 8:08.46. Miami ‘B’ also advanced, as Head of the Hooch pairs champions Caitlin Lowe and Sarah Aschebrock won Heat 2 with a time of 8:10.70.

Miami ‘C’ earned one of three at-large bids to the final, as Caitlin White-Parsons and Hannah Nielsen finished second in Heat 3 with a time of 8:22.48. Jane Moore and Alex Gunner formed Miami ‘D’, posting a time of 8:37.44 to finish second in Heat 2. Moore and Gunner just missed advancing to the final, finishing seventh overall in the preliminaries. The Women’s Varsity Pair final is scheduled for 11:01 a.m. Sunday.

The Hurricanes had two of three boats competing in the Women’s Varsity Four event advance to the Semi-Final. Miami ‘B’ earned a semi-final spot after winning Heat 2 with a time of 8:01.68, while Miami ‘A’ advanced after finishing second in Heat 6 with a time of 8:04.47. Miami ‘A’ and Miami ‘B’ would finish third and fourth, respectively, in Semi-Final 2 with times of 8:37.80 and 8:38.20, respectively. Both boats will compete in the Women’s Varsity Four Petite Final at 12:18 p.m. on Sunday.

The Canes’ 1V8+ advanced to the Semi-Final in the Women’s Varsity Eight event, winning Heat 1 with a time of 7:18.27. Miami’s top varsity eight will race out of Lane 1 in Semi-Final 1 at 8:18 a.m. on Sunday. The top two boats in each Semi-Final will advance to the Grand Final, while the third and fourth boats in each Semi-Final will move on to the Petite Final and the final two boats in each Semi-Final will race in the Third Level Final.

The 2V8+ finished fourth in Heat 2 of the Women’s Second Varsity Eight event with a time of 7:44.88, while Miami’s lone boat in the Women’s Second Varsity Four event finished third in Heat 4 with a time of 8:43.25.

Miami’s 3V8+ will open its competition in the Women’s Third Varsity Eight event at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, racing out of Lane 4 in Heat 1 of two. The top two times in each heat and the next two fastest overall times will advance to the final, scheduled for 1:56 p.m. on Sunday.

Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will host UCF on April 23 in the lone home event of the 2016 season. In addition to racing against the Knight, Miami seniors Aschebrock, Lowe, Nielsen, Joletta Silva, White-Parsons, Whitty and Williamson will race on their home course for the final time.

The Hurricanes will close out the 2016 spring season at the ACC Championships on May 13-14 in Clemson, S.C.
