Hurricanes Stand in Fifth After One Round at the Allstate Intercollegiate

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Miami women’s golf team opened play at the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate on Sunday and currently stands in fifth place.
 
The Hurricanes finished the day with a team total of 291 and are just four strokes behind tournament leaders Arizona and Oklahoma State. Both teams began the tournament with scores of 287.
 
The three-day event is being held at the par 72, 6,239-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club.
 
Daniela Darquea led the way for the Hurricanes and is currently tied for seventh. The Hurricane junior, who missed the first tournament of the year because of an injury, posted a two-under-par score of 70.
 
Darquea opened with two bogeys on the first nine holes, but then closed with an eagle on hole six and birdies on holes eight and nine to finish with a 35 on the front nine. On her final nine holes, Darquea closed out the round on a high note as she tallied three birdies.
 
Senior Kailey Walsh also posted a strong opening round as she shot even par. Walsh carded four birdies on the day and is currently tied for 14th.
 
Teammates, Dewi Weber (tied for 31st), Delfina Acosta (tied for 38th) and Luiza Altman (tied for 58th) rounded out Miami’s top five as they fired rounds of 74, 75 and 77, respectively.
 
Stanford’s Lauren Kim holds the individual lead after she posted a first round score of 68.
 
Second round action begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
