Swimming Splits Tri-Meet with FAU, FGCU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes continued to build early momentum in their spring schedule Saturday, splitting a double dual meet with host FAU and No. 29 FGCU at the FAU Aquatic Center.

Miami topped the dual meet host Owls by a dominant final score of 197-84, but fell to the Eagles 166-111. The win over FAU marked Miami’s second of the season over the Owls and sixth overall of 2015-16.

Sophomore Julie Suarez opened Miami’s day with a first-place showing in the 200 freestyle (1:51.41), while sophomore Ksenia Yuskova (1:53.14, fourth) and junior Cameron Davis (1:55.98, fifth) also delivered strong performances in the event.

Freshman Roxanne Yu and junior Christina Leander, who have been Miami’s top point-getters in backstroke events, took second (56.37) and third (56.48), respectively, to add to Miami’s early score total.

Miami had two of the top five times in the 200 butterfly, with junior Angela Algee taking second (2:02.45) and sophomore Jessica Hurley taking fifth (2:08.24). In the 50 freestyle, senior captain My Fridell finished third (24.30) while sophomore Rebeka Repman took fifth (24.48).

The Hurricanes had a dominant day on the boards, with freshman Carolyn Chaney taking first in the 1-meter (300.70) and fellow freshman Marcela Maric not far behind in second (275.95). The two flipped positions for the 3-meter, with Maric taking first (307.30) and Chaney taking second (291.55).

Sophomore men’s diver Briadam Herrera posted scores of 387.70 in the 1-meter and 411.05 in the 3-meter.

Suarez picked up her second win of the day in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 51.48 to narrowly top FGCU’s Katie Latham (51.58). Algee finished fourth (52.55) while Repman took sixth (53.44).

Yu and Leander again earned points for Miami in the 200 back, with Yu finishing second (2:01.16) and Leander fourth (2:04.79).

In the only distance event of the day, the Hurricanes showed their depth by posting three of the top-five finishes. Sophomore Ksenia Yuskova led the way for Miami with a second-place time of 5:00.63, while junior Cameron Davis (5:01.79, third) and sophomore Julia Suarez (5:09.26, fifth) also finished strong.

Miami built some late momentum when Algee and Fridell finished 1-2 in the 100 fly. Algee picked up her first win of the double dual meet with a time of 55.53, while Fridell touched the wall in a time of 56.03.

Miami’s 200 free relay team, comprised of Yuskova, Suarez, Fridell and Algee, closed the meet in a second-place time of 1:36.39.
