Tune in to Local Radio for @CanesHoops Games
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the 17th-straight year, the University of Miami men’s basketball team will have all 30 of its regular season games in 2015-16 broadcast on local radio – either 560 WQAM or WHIM 1080 – the university announced Thursday.
Of the 30 games, 21 will be broadcast on 560 WQAM, the flagship station for the Miami Hurricanes. Each broadcast will open with a 30-minute pregame show leading up to tipoff, hosted by Joe Zagacki, the Voice of the Canes now in his 21st season with the basketball team.
Miami basketball has been broadcast on WQAM since 1999, and the 17-year run is the longest on one station since hoops began at UM in 1926. Prior to WQAM, the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons were on WINZ 940, and from 1985 – the season the program was brought back after a 15-year hiatus – until 1997, fans tuned in to WIOD-610 radio. From 1955-71 fans could listen on various radio stations in the Coral Gables area.
Miami opens the 2015-16 season on Friday, Nov. 13 against UT Rio Grande Valley (formerly Texas Pan Am) at 7 p.m., a game that will be delivered on 560 WQAM radio.
The Canes open the regular season with 10 scholarship players available, nine of which wore a Miami uniform last season. Four starters return for the Canes including seniors Sheldon McClellan, Angel Rodriguez and Tonye Jekiri, as well as junior Davon Reed.
UM’s backcourt could be labeled as one of the best in the ACC, as Rodriguez and McClellan lead the charge for the Canes. Rodriguez averaged 11.9 points and 3.9 assists per game a season ago while McClellan, who is listed on the preseason watch list for the Jerry West Award, posted 14.5 points per game on 48.4 percent shooting from the field.
Miami is receiving 11 votes in the USA TODAY Preseason Coaches Poll and 48 votes in the AP Top 25.
With a record of 561-383 in 31 seasons as a head coach, Jim Larrañaga is tied for 57th on the NCAA’s list of all-time winningest coaches, and is tied for 12th on the list of winningest active coaches in games against major schools. He holds a 91-49 record through four seasons at Miami and is 41-29 in the ACC.
