BOSTON — The University of Miami rowing team had three boats excel at the 2015 Head of the Charles regatta.

Sunday’s Championship 4+ boat was the top finisher for the Hurricanes this weekend. Miami’s lone boat placed eighth among the field of 19 in the Women’s Championship 4+ event. Coxed by Kate Edmonson, stroked by Ally Whitty followed by Taegan Lynch, Caitlin Lowe and Sarah Aschebrock, the Hurricanes’ boat crossed the finish line with a time of 19:06.945.

“It was a solid race for our championship four entry today,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “They pressed hard at every opportunity and kept pushing for more speed. I think they are proud of their effort and look forward to gaining some speed for our final fall regatta in three weeks.”

Miami had two boats in action on Saturday afternoon, competing in the Women’s Club 4+ event that featured a field of 63 boats. The Hurricanes’ Club4+ A boat coxed by Lily Wittle, stroked by Catherine Tayler followed by Caitlin White-Parsons, Gigi Williamson and Alex Gunner placed 11th with a time of 19:51.748.  Miami’s Club 4+ B boat coxed by Nicole Rotkovitz and stroked by Taylor Richard followed by Jane Moore, Caroline Shaw and Elise Wiley finished 19th with a time of 20:18.360.

“It was a great first day of the regatta for the Hurricanes,” Sanderson said. “Both boats had good races. The athletes were able to execute what we had been working on in practice on the day of the race, which is always the goal. For some it was their first Head of the Charles regatta, which made it extra exciting.”

The Head of the Charles regatta is widely acclaimed as the world’s largest two-day rowing event, drawing over 9,000 athletes around the world to compete in 55 different race events.  Boats racing in the Head of the Charles compete against one another and the clock, which will start sequentially, approximately 15 seconds apart.

More information on the Head of the Charles is available at the race’s official website.

Miami will close out its fall season at the Head of the Hooch regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. A year ago, the Canes had four boats compete at the Head of the Hooch. They will look to improve on their previous success in this year’s Head of the Hooch, scheduled for November 7-8.
