Q&A

Q: What has been your favorite part of being a Hurricane?

A: I love having been able to carry on the tradition of excellence set by previous Miami athletes and being able to represent The U to my fellow students and competitors.

Q:How does running in college differ from running in high school?

A: Practices are much more professional. We have a training room to stretch, ice, and recover after workouts, a trainer to monitor our injuries, and a strength coach in the weight room.

Q: What did your weekly mileage get up to at the high point?

A: I ran around 55-60 miles per week in high school, and was injured for a large part of my freshman year, so I have mostly maintained that mileage so far.

Q: Tell me how you got started in the sport and whether you excelled right away or if it was a more gradual process of getting to a high level?

A: I ran track in grade school, and did pretty well in the mile, so when I went to high school I decided to go out for cross country and track. My first year in high school was okay, and I was the Indianapolis freshman city champ, which proved to me that I could train harder and do well as an upperclassman. I improved gradually after our team had a dismal showing at sectionals my freshman year, and a group of us decided to work harder to make it to the State Championship, a goal we achieved my junior year.

Q: What are you working on this fall to be able to better for at the ACC Championships?

A: I’m working my hardest every day, and I’m trying to go faster on my runs.  I’m also cross training to avoid injury.

Q: What was the biggest adjustment for you since your freshmen year?

A: Waking up at 5:30 for 6am practices. I still haven’t gotten used to that, and probably never will.

Q: Do you prefer a tactical race, or do you like a race that’s fast from the gun?

A:I love to push the pace throughout the race.  I try to outrun my competitors who have worse endurance than me, so they can’t outkick me in the end

Q: Do you have a favorite workout during cross country, one that you think is especially beneficial?

A: I like 400, 800, or mile repeats near race pace with not much time in between.  That really helps me get my pace down while working my endurance.

Q: How about track versus cross country? Do you prefer one over the other, and is cross country primarily preparation for track?

A: I prefer track, mainly because tracks have no hills.  However, I’m a distance guy, and take cross country very seriously and want to compete with the best in the coming years.
